SKB-63

SKB-63

Postby analogsystem on Fri Aug 07, 2009 2:21 pm

Has anybody bought one of these? I basically never play my FB at shows because the case is just too damn big!
I don't want to put it in a gigbag because of that huge and fragile headstock.

This case is supposed to fit explorers and firebirds really well. I know it'll probably be much lighter than the Gibson case but I am wondering if it's small enough to warrant the high price?

Anybody have any experiences?

I've never seen one in person, but the reps at AMS are usually pretty knowledgeable & usually honest enough to admit it if they don't know something. They might be able to tell you the weight/size. I'd be more concerned that it will have clearance for the tuners on a FB.

I have two of them. They are the most supportive firebird case I've tried BUT:

1. Its huge! Wider than the cheap Epiphone firebird cases (vinyl covered versions of the gibson)
2. You can't stack things on it

That being said I've flown with them 3 times and its been fantastic each time.

Sleepingtiger, the description states that it is specifically designed with enough depth for the banjo tuners.

DougK, I think that the Gibson case is much much larger than the epiphone cases that I've seen though you might be right. I realize the SKB is probaby as wide at the bottom of the guitar, but at least its not a giant rectangle all the way around.

Could you walk a mile or 2 with this case in hand? I don't think I'm a weakling but I did walk home from the store when I bought my FB and it was totally lame with the Gibson case. Riding the bus? Forget it! My Gibson case is much larger than my bass player's case.

I'm glad Doug was able to help you out. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers...

Its actually wider (than the epi) by about 2-3" but your right its not a big rectangle. Thats exactly why I bought my first two.

The epiphone case IS lighter though by a fair margin. Its probably not as solid as the gibby case but Im not sure I still have this feeling its just the same case with a cheaper cover material and fabric.

Personally I like having both. I'd use the SKB's to fly and ship and I treat the epi's as basically a glorified gig bag.

Hmm.....I have a few higher gear priorities but I think I'll probably get one of these at some point. Perhaps if I do another tour on the other side of the pond next year I'll bring the bird and get this SKB case. Sounds like its up the airport-baggage-check challenge.
thanks!

So far so good (crosses fingers). I take a couple towels and use them to fill up any void space around the body and under the headstock.

I personally don't really like the SKB cases. I'm just not a fan of plastic cases. I'm sure it's a great case, but I'd much prefer a wooden case. It's just nicer if you ask me. There is a Warwick guitar case that is a bit longer that a Firebird will fit in. I just bought a Warwick case for my new Strat, and it's solid and well made, and I'll probably invest in the larger one for my Firebird.
