Summertime Blues

Summertime Blues

Postby Pappy on Tue Jul 14, 2009 8:21 am

Here in the great southwest it's summertime. Heavy sigh!
Where as the northerners hibernate in the bone chilling winter, us desert rat's hibernate in the searing summer.
Big changes in temp an humidity occur this time of year and it sometimes plays havoc with the necks of our beloved axes. Hot and dry as a popcorn fart changes to Hot and moist as the forehead of a priest with a porno mag.
Anyway....4 weeks ago I picked up a Mesa Boogie 5:25 amp for cheap on Flea Bay. Man, am I lovin this amp! I've been running all my guitars through her to see what marvelous tones I can wring out of her!
And just this past weekend I scored a Baja Tele for cheap on Craigs Fist!
You know how it is when you get something new. It becomes you favorite pride and joy for the initial honeymoon time period.
Anyway I'm keeping my Firebird V cased lately and only take it out when I play it, then right back to the case. I'm going to take her in for a complete set up (she needs it!)and a bone nut as soon as Fall (ahhh!) arrives.
So for the next 2-3 months it's run to the car from the house, run from the car into work, from work to the car, from the car to the beer store and home again to run into the house and draw the shades.
Thank God I got a pool!

Yeah, here in the Midwest, our guitars get a chance to re-humidify.
Gotta love a Tele too! Good times...

I pulled out the 'Bird last night after letting her rest for about a week and half and man it played like butter! Man she pleyed better then when I put her away.
What inspired me to pull her out was watching the Clapton Guitar fest from 2004 in Austin. David Hildago wailed on a beautiful 'Bird "V" in white. Man he had some great tones and from what I could tell he was using a Crate V 50 w/ 2x12"!
I was amazed. didn't think Crates were that good.
I'm still planning on taking the Firebird in for a set up, but I haven't decided who to take her to.
The guy I've been using for years seems to be getting unstable and a little whacko lately and I've heard a lot of complaints about the quality of his work. We'll see.
I've got to say that I've spent way too much on musical equipment over the past 2-3 months - the new 'Bird, a used Boogie 5:25 Express and a used Baja Tele. I sold some stuff , but it only makes up for about 1/6th of what I spent. My eyes are bigger than my house!
Johnny and Edgar Winter are coming in early Sept to a small venue in town. I saw Johnny there 2 years ago. I'm definitely going to see him this time trough. He's looking pretty bad and I don't want to pass up what might be my last chance to see him.
Well ... Take care, I'm just bored and babbling on a hot afternoon @ work.........

I'm in Chandler AZ. Chandler is a suburb to the southeast of Phoenix proper.
20 years ago it used to be sheep farms and unpaved roads where I live, but now........... Population explosion!
Johnny W. has played the Phx area every few years since I moved here in '82. I try to see him every time he comes through.
They will be playing @ the Celebrity Theater. It’s a great venue in the round w/ a revolving stage and killer sound system. No seat supposedly more than 75’ from the stage. Seats 2600 max.
I saw Johnny, Guitar Slim and Leon Russell there a year ago last month.
Restrung the Firebird this weekend and forgot to take dimensions of the tuning key hole to see if the Steinberger keys will fit w/o any major mods.
I see Stew Mac has a drawing w/ all the dimensions for the tuners attached to there web add for the Steinberger tuners. I want to replace the stock keys on my F.B. I really don’t like them at all. Hard to mess with and precision tune. I’m going to pull the trigger soon on new keys.

I just got done with a 19 show west coast / south west tour (I'm based in Seattle) and I am glad I did NOT bring my Firebird. I thought about it for a second but most of the tour our gear is in the van.....and it was 117 degrees in Phoenix! I brought my trusty Hamer studio which is about the most stable guitar I've ever seen.

There were a couple days when I took my guitar out to warm up for the show and it radiated heat like a hot stone! I mean not just the metal parts.....the wood itself was putting out heat from the core!

I love my bird but it's too temperamental for that kind of thing. I'll bet the finish would have melted too.
