1 Week In........

1 Week In........

Postby Pappy on Fri May 08, 2009 3:46 pm

It's been a week since I got my Firebird V.............
Over all , I really like the guitar and tone it generates. As I said, I don't care for the tuners, but will wait a while until I fork over the $100 for the steinberger gearless ones. Do the Steinbergers fit the Gibson Firebird w/o too much modification?
Took the control cover off and every thing looks good under the hood. The smell of the nitro finish hangs heavy in the air.
That's the only way sweet ole Grand Ma figured out I had a new guitar!!! "What is that smell? Sniff, sniff." She saw me playing the bird a few times during the week and never questioned it (she has no interest in my musical equipment), but she sure as hell could smell it!
Any suggestions on how to tame the treble on the bridge pup a little? Or do you just fiddle w/ the vol and tone control.
The neck pup really rips it up!!! Perfect for electric blues and classic rock. Comfortable to play standing up, or sitting down.
Sounds great on all my amps. I mostly use the SpiderJam so as to play along w/ the loop tracks.
Really rips on the B.H. Little Giant, too. I put together a Bitmo 10- uator and now I can crank the little amp up to 10 and turn the 10-uator down to about 9-10 o'clock and experience great tube OD, with minimal tone suck from the 10-uator.
All in all, I'll rate the Firebird V a solid 8.5 out of 10 after one week.

I'd change the pickup(s), as I can't stand the new ones, but that's just me. Maybe someone else has an easier fix for ya.....Good Luck!

Few options:

1. Lower the treble side of the pickup
2. Change the Volume or Tone pot to a 300k or 250k
3. Change the Capacitor to a .047 (it's probably a .022uf right now).
4. Change the pickup

Hey there,

Understand that Gibson Firebirds ship with 300k pots.

As mentioned in another post, I have had good success by lowering the neck pickup wayyyyyyy down to be flush with the pickup ring. Treble side slightly down and roll off some of the trebles - tone at 7.

I tried to like the Antiquity but just didn't do it for me - oh well!

Reasonably balanced.

Always a compromise.

Cheers
