Pickup switch problem

Pickup switch problem

Postby Goshawk on Tue Apr 21, 2009 4:56 pm

The pickup switch will only stay in the middle position.
I used to be able to switch pickups but only for a minute
or so before it clicked back to center. The guitar has little
playing time on it. Does anyone know how to fix this without
replacing the switch? Thanks

I'm assuming you're talking about the toggle on a reverse Firebird, right? If so, it could be the tension on the "springs". I THINK, they might be too tight, but before CAREFULLY bending them, I would suggest pulling the pickguard & switching it to one of the single pickup positions & watching the action of the switch as it returns to the center position.
I've had this happen meny years ago on a guitar with the same switch & was able to re-tension it.
At least, even at the worst, replacing the switch is a cheap, easy fix!

I hope I helped...a little. Good luck!

Yes it is a reverse Firebird V.
I was thinking the switch "springs" would be too loose.
I really don't want to remove the pick-guard. I suppose
if I monkey with the switch and screw it up I'll just put a new switch in.
Oh well so much for remaining stock but it's got to be functional.
Thanks

I would think if it's springing back to center, they'd be too tight. You should be able to tell if you look. At least it's not an issue of removing strings etc.!

Not sure if you were joking on removing the strings but I wanted to polish the
guitar and decided to take all the strings off at once which I usually never do. From not thinking
this through before hand the bridge pieces fell out and when I got the strings on the bridge setup
had changed. I still have not been able to set it up as good as it was. Thankfully the guitar didn't get
scratched to hell when the bridge pieces fell out. Something to think about if a person doesn't already know this.

No, I meant like on a Strat or other full pickguard guitars, where you have to take the strings off to get at the wiring. Just follow your normal set-up steps, minus the neck adjustment & you'll get her back where you want her, I'm sure.
Did you get your switch problem solved?
