Modding stock Gibson Firebird Pickup?

Modding stock Gibson Firebird Pickup?

Postby analogsystem on Fri Aug 21, 2009 11:20 am

As we all know the stock pickups in modern Firebirds are not exactly well loved by us FB players.

I however, do like the massive output quite a bit. I am wondering what the construction is like inside? I know it's ceramic but does it have real FB construction (magnetic rails) or does it have a bar magnet inside?

If it does have a bar magnet, could that magnet be switched out for an alnico one? This would keep most of the output (still has tons of windings) but would perhaps fatten it up a pinch and take a little edge off?

You guys think this could be done? I understand a magnet swap on a normal PAF style pup is easy....
thanks!

Having never taken one apart, this is just a guess, but given that the magnets are in the center of the coils, I would THINK it would be hard to find a perfect fit. Without a tight fit, I would think it would be extremely microphonic.
Any pickup gurus care to chime in?
