Hey DougK,

Thanks for the note.

Have also investigated Kent Armstrong pu's and understand they are great for the money.

However, how close in tone are they to vintage Firebird pu's?
Chasing that vintage tone and don't want to drop more money than necessary.

Cheers

I've been very VERY happy with them 'cept they only make 1 winding. So it sounds GREAT for the neck, not bad for the mid but its pretty low output at the bridge.

I've actually used KAs at the neck & middle with a Duncan vintage bridge with pretty good results, but do find the KAs too "polite", no growl. I think the duncans sound more like my vintage Gibsons. Just my opinion, of course!

Hey DougK,

Apologize for the delay in responding as have been away/busy for a while now.

I have seriously considered the Kent Armstrong (as not entirely happy with the Antiquity).

Understand that it sounds very vintage, but a little bit hotter.

Would appreciate your comments.

I might have a couple of Armstrong minis for sale in the coming weeks. I'll post them in the Fire Sale section, of course! IMHO, they're OK, but a bit too "polite" for my tastes. You might love 'em, you never know...

I LOVE mine... but let me explain why.

The neck is fantastic imo. Its not spot on vintage 'bird (though I've never played an actual 60's bird so I couldn't be sure on that) but its got a great tone.

The problem with the KA's are they are only wound at one output. When used in the middle on a VII mine has a great clunky, hollow'ish tone I really dig. It ALMOST does a good tele type tone or with a compressor on a REALLY great Albert Collins type tone.

Now when used at the bridge its way low on the output end. At first I HATED the sound of it there but after the last year of playing live a couple times a week with it its really grown on me. It absolutely sounds PHENOMENAL if your using a good OD/Boost pedal with it. My favorite is a Greer Amps Ghetto Stomp. OMG this makes for a fantastic sounding combo.

It actually reminds me a lot of early Freddie King type tones. That being said, it really does only sound good imo with a good pedal boosting the output up. Personally I think really the best option out there from what I've listened to is Lollars set. Pricey though...

Hey Tony, let me know before you sell those pup's. Im building another VII for the guitarist I play with and he absolutely loves the KA's as well (I have a hell of a time getting my bird back from him when I let him borrow it! LOL). He'll probably snatch em up from you.
